Coconut Oil for Vaginal Dryness
What is vaginal dryness?
Vaginal dryness is the result of a thinning of the vaginal lining. The occurrence of vaginal dryness is also a sign of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause. It’s often accompanied by a burning, itching or pain in the area. There are two conditions that caused vaginal dryness:
-
Vaginal atrophy: This occurs in postmenopausal women. It’s characterized by a thinning of the vaginal lining that can lead to decreased lubrication and irritation. The vagina also becomes more susceptible to infection, as well as less able to absorb sperm during intercourse.
-
Vaginal candidiasis: This occurs in premenopausal women and is characterized by an overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. Symptoms include itching, burning or discomfort when urinating or having sex.
If you have a dry vagina, it’s not normal. It can happen for a number of reasons. Many women experience vaginal dryness after menopause or as they age, but it can also be the result of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or the use of some prescription medications. Vaginal dryness can also be a symptom of other health conditions, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections and inflammatory conditions like irritable bowel syndrome.
Vaginal dryness can be a cause for concern if you notice any signs and symptoms that make you uncomfortable or interfere with your sex life:
-
You feel burning during urination or sexual intercourse,
-
Your genitals are itchy, painful or swollen,
-
You experience difficulty reaching orgasm during intercourse,
-
You experience discomfort during intercourse with your partner because your vagina is dry and tight. This is particularly common when you’re sexually aroused. When this occurs, you may need to use lubricants.

Is it Safe To Use Coconut Oil For Vaginal Dryness?
It is always a good idea to test coconut oil in a small area at your forearm before deciding to use it for vaginal lubrication. Rub it onto your forearm skin and wait up to 24 hours, if there is no sign of allergic reaction then it’s safe to use it into your vagina.
However, you must be aware that any kind of oil can break down the latex in condom and diaphragm, which makes them less effective or even broke and increases the risk of unplanned pregnancies and STI/STD.
